DVD Review: Discipleship Explored
Reviewed by Peter Kozushko Associate Pastor
Countryside Community Church, Sherwood, OR
Discipleship Explored is a study of Paul’s letter to the Philippians in the same genre of the Christianity Explored course, with inductive study of each section of the letter, video teaching unpacking the central truths of each passage with follow-up discussion questions, and a daily Bible study for the week ahead. The course is designed for brand new Christians to help get them established in the faith. Paul’s letter to the Philippians is perfect for this because the church was a young church facing the same kinds of issues that all new Christians face, e.g. having assurance of salvation, living for Christ rather than self, learning contentment, and grasping the tension between God’s work in us and our obedience to Him so as to avoid the extremes of legalism and antinomianism. As participants learn from the Apostle Paul what to believe about such matters and how to act on them they also get equipped in how to read, study and interpret the Bible. One of the main aims of the course is to simple get new Christians reading the Bible
Discipleship Explored is also a great tool to equip Christians to disciple new believers. The leader’s guide includes six interactive training sessions on the content of the course and how to best prepare for it. The video teaching also takes the pressure off the leader having to be an expert Bible teacher. The video talks, presented by Barry Cooper, are clear, very engaging, and innovative like the videos in Christianity Explored and the production is high quality. The aim of the Christianity and Discipleship Explored Team is to be faithful to the historic truths of the Christian faith in the Reformed Evangelical tradition and present those truths in fresh, innovative and culturally relevant ways—and they deliver.
This course will serve our new Christian follow-up ministry well for years to come. I highly recommend it!
